AirPrint Activator v2.0b16
Quick note about the new release of AirPrint Activator 2.0b16.
This new release changes the following:
v2.0b16 (August 13 2011):
– newly compiled under XCode 4.1.1
– added a new warning window that let you know if the OSX Firewall is on and what consequence this might have on APA2
If AirPrint Activator is working fine for you then no need to upgrade. If you do upgrade from a previous v2.0bX release simple run the new version, turn AirPrint OFF and then back ON again. That is it.
You can download the latest copy in the main page of AirPrint Activator V2.0.

My firewall is off but I get message it is on. Mac OS V 10.6.8
Humm… Lion might have a different firewall interface than snow leopard. I will check into it later tonight and see what I can do.

OS 10.6.8 I quit v1 and trashed and emptied before installing v2.0b16. I get an error message that I need to turn of v1 before v2 will run. I don’t have v1 anymore. Is there a file in the system I need to delete? What should I do?
Simply download the old v1.1.3 version, run it, turn AirPrint off, remove the printers, add them back, then run APA v2.0b16.

I’m experiencing an issue where the APA Activator Warning is displaying, indicating that the firewall is on, but I have confirmed that it is not. Running Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6.8). I believe one other commenter has reported the same problem, but someone replied that they would check why this is happening in Lion. OS X 10.6.8 is not Lion–it’s Snow Leopard.
Doesn’t work: I have a Mac Pro w/WiFi network running OSX-Lion. Turned Firewall off and nothing prints to any printer (HP8100-wireless to Mac Pro, HP7100-wireless to Mac Pro, HP1300-USB to Apple Extreme). All printers are shown in “On” AirPrint but nevertheless no printing is achieved from iPad2’s or iPhone.
Check if DUPLEX is ON as the default for those printers… if it is try turning if OFF and see if it actually print. Not sure why but apparently Duplex ON cause print issues from iDevices.
Duplexers, where applicable, are not on.
Made sure no other AirPrint version was on Mac Pro (deleted a try to use in May I found in Downloads), reloaded AirPrint August download, turned printers “Off”, reset them to “On”, and added AirPrint to Security/Privacy Advanced setting programs, and tried to print from iPad2-Safari to each of the 3 printers but, alas, says it is printing to each (quickly to the USB printer and slow to 7100 & 8100) but no…Doesn’t print to anything.
Have you tried with the firewall off?
If it still does not work then the next thing would be to try the Printopia demo and see if that work.
Still doesn’t work.
Tried turning AirPrint “Off” and “On”, tried printing to each of the printers, and it seems to come closer to working when Firewall is on with AirPrint allowed in Security Advanced settings: get messages for each printer that “Printing to…Contacting Printer”, which stays on for ~3 minutes, then for the USB printer it says it is “Preparing to Print…1 of 8 pages” though my print job is only 1 page, which then the 2nd message disappears, but nothing prints and the printer does not show any sign of a send to it. Attempts to print to the other two WiFi color printers/scanners only shows the 1st message, which disappears after ~3 minutes and, again, no printouts.
I looked at all of the printer queues and the printers are “Ready” and without any jobs listed for printing.
Also tried from iPhone 4 and same result: no result.
Thanks for the suggestions but won’t be able to donate here–love to if it worked–since it does not work.
What is the “Printopia Demo” and where do I find it?
Clark
Look for it on google 😉

Used the Printopia demo and, with some computer/iDevice rebooting/resetting, it works.
Oddly, the printers listed in all my iDevices shows not only the Printopia printers (all of my 3 plus my Mac Pro as a virtual) plus each of them as “AirPrint” printers. So, my iDevices show 8 printers, 4 Printopias and 4 Airprints.
Well, thanks. I am able to now print using iPads and iPhone4. Something Apple should have or should include in the future.
Clark
I have found that I don’t need to turn the firewall off at all. If I go into the security&privacy system pref panel and click on the “advanced…” button under the Firewall tab I can add AirPrintActivator and everything works fine.
Actually, please be or report the person that all the prints consist of lion.
I get the message that the Firewall is on even though it is not on 2..0b16. I am running 10.6.8 on a MacBook Pro. The shared printers show up fine but I cannot print to them. The cups-pdf doesn’t print either. All previous versions availbale to try?
Thank you, Bruce
I am getting the Firewall on dialogue even though it is actually off. I tried toggling it on and off but I still get the Firewall on dialogue when starting. It then tries to print but the Print Summary shows the spinning gear forever. ‘Printopia Demo’ does however print properly. I am using a MacBook Pro running 10.6.8.
Thank you,
Bruce
v20b16 only works when I turn double-sided printing off – great otherwise thanks and hope you enable double side printing (setup; iPhone 4, Lion 10.7.1 on 2009 MacMini, Xerox Phaser 6300 DN printer, Airport Extreme Timecapsule wireless network
Thank you for the feedback. Yeah, for some reasons that I don’t yet understand if Duplex is turned on on the printer config AirPrint won’t work.
I have tried something. Download the test version here: http://netputing.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=278
and let me know if it work better.
I posted on the forum. That duplexing still needs to be turned off on b17.
Darn, then the issue can’t be fixed by APA in it’s current implementation.
Running Snow Leopard and 2 printers. Tried with firewall off and on with APA ok in advanced settings. Both printers are shared and showing in APA216 and neither is seen on iphone or ipad. WHY?
Works perfectly in my OSX Lion Server, but… as it is a server I really want to run it in the background without login, any thoughts of to manage this?
I might tackle it one of these days. Should not be too hard but I need to make sure that it will work fine.
Cheers!
Macbook 2008

First updated bios of Brother HL-2710W.
Downloaded Airprint Activator and ran it.
Ran the aparedir in the helper folder.
Turned it on.
Went to System Preference -> Print & Fax.
Clicked on + to add printer.
Showed that I could add Airprint Brother … in other words you can add the Airprint server for your printer.
Made sure that the Airprint was not shared.
Made sure that the regular printer was shared.
Closed the Airprint activator program.
Restarted the Macbook and now am able to print without issues or firewall errors.
This may help.
I have Lion on my mac and now I can print from my Ipad any time. AMAZING, since I have looked for something like this for quite a while and tried lots of apps that didn’t work, or were so complicated I gave up. Thanks a million!
I found an easy way to make it work with the firewall active.
sudo -i
cd /Applications/AirPrintActivator.app/Contents/Resources/AirPrintDaemon.app/Contents/Resources
cp aparedir /Applications/
mv aparedir aparedir.sav
ln -n /Applications/aparedir aparedir
start your firewall it not stared, add aparedir to the applications under advanced.
restart AirPrintActivator and try it.
Check your console logs.
should look like this

Awesome! I will try to see if I can change the way I have been running aparedir to what you proposed. Somehow Apple only does signed app firewall pass through if the application is in the Application folder… odd but who am I to tell Apple they are wrong 😉

APA warns OS X firewall is on –>Security says it is off; it has never been on
Printing status: “printer offline” for both iPad and iPhone
It worked once upon a time…but not now
I have the same Printopia by Ecamm network (expired demo) in my preferences…is it related to APA?
I tried Print Agent Pro for my wife’s iPad 1, our iphones once-upon-a-time printed now none print.
iPad 1–today sees AirPrint HP 8500 A909g with hostname HPxxxx, status is “printing” notwithstanding “Printer offline” warning.
The only way I can find APA is with Spotlight
AirPrint version of HP 8500 won’t print from MacBook Pro: Network host ‘my-macbook-pro-2.local.’ is busy
Don’t need it any more, updated bios on my Brother HL-2710W and notice I can download an Airprint update from Apple. Did so and now I can print from ipad and iphone without issues.
Just loaded APA v2.0b16 on a Mac Mini running Lion 10.7.1. Works fine for 1-sided printing, but I cannot use the 2-sided print feature on the attached HP Officejet J6480 (printing from an iPad to the printer does not print anything, and no error message, when trying to print duplex).
Unfortunately this is a known issue. I have not figured a way around this one yet… sorry!
bmaltais, you are doing such great work, thanks. I tested on 3 iDevices (iPad2, iPod touch4, iPhone4). Since I only need duplex functionality when working on large projects from my MB Pro, this is what I did in the meantime:
1. In System Preference -> Print & Fax -> Clicked on + and added printer.
2. Turned on sharing & all other features including Duplexing.
3. Opened APA & it displayed “AirPrint HP PSC6280”. Closed the APA program.
4. Created test page in Pages (on all iDevices), clicked print.
5. When print menu popped up (http://goo.gl/0hcYS), I turned off “Double-sided”
6. The test page printed
Now I don’t have to turn on duplexing every time I need it from the MB Pro and turn it off to print from iDevices. I would love to be able to duplex, but until that time comes this will have to do.
Hello. I had it working a moment ago, but then I updated my Lexmark driver for I don’t know what reason. I don’t know how to reverse that, either. Every printer gets doubled in the listing. The printer is detected just fine, changes to the driver are made just fine (such as typing in a different location), but when it goes to print from the iDevice it just sits at “Contacting Printer…”.
When I first ran it and got it working (didn’t take but a couple of minutes and some care), it showed up immediately as having sent the job on. Now it won’t send the job. Any ideas, Mr. bmaltais? Thanks for any help…
Try turning AirPrint OFF, reboot, turn AIrPrint ON and see if this help…

V2.0b16 works, iMac OSX10.7.1 but looses contact with the printer probably after the computer goes in sleep mode.
Just switching off and on does the trick, annoying
This is the nature of the beast I am afraid.
does this work for the iphone 4s and a windows pc?
I am afraid not
I have upgraded to lion 10.7.2. my air print stopped working, i installed the printer and installed 2.0b2 version. I shared my printer, and the printer shows up in activator (Epson 835) I go to my iPad/iphone and the printer shows up. I print to it , it says sending then nothing, its like it went into a black hole.. The printer works from the mac. The printer is on my local network and air print worked prior… Stumped as I have tried to uninstall multiple times.. Thanks for any help
Is your firewall ON? If so download v2.1b2 of the application and configure the aparedir helper in the allowed app of the firewall.
Another possible reason is that APA does not work well when Duplex is ON in your printer preference.
Hope this help
Hi,
Follow the guide and I can see printers in my iPhone 4 with iOS5. Mac is 10.7.2 and share 2 printers, laserJet 1018 and PSC 1610. After print from my iPhone, there is nothing happened. Turn off and on again in airprintactivator, still can’t fix the issue. Any help?
Thanks a lot,
Ian
Mac OS 10.6.8 APA V2.0b16 iphone 4 IOS 5
Having the issue where 2 printers are listed in APA, one with @ Mac. This results in 2 showing on the iphone, but only one of the entries is valid. Not a big deal as I know which one to use and it works fine, but would be cool to fix…
Still running 10.6.8 and all of a sudden my printer no longer appears in the Airprint Activator application as a “Printer available for Air Printing:”. I’m wondering if it has something to do with the latest Apple Security Update? I tried installing v2.0b16 to see if the problem still exists and it does. Also, when I launch Air Print Activator, it says that my OS X firewall is running, but it isn’t. Could it be detecting my router’s firewall instead and thus preventing the proper loading of the printer?
Is a new airprint activator available for windows vista users?
I don’t know. I only make AirPrintActivator for Mac. I wish I could make one for Windows.
Sent from my iPad
Hi ,
I am running osx 10.6.8 and was running your airprintactivor 1.x
I upgraded to the V2.0b16 and stupidly i installed without first removing the old version.
The new version doesn’t show any printers at all. At installation it said that firewall was on, which isn’t the case. I tried everything remobing all the share options and ticking it n again. but it refuses to show my printers.
do you know a trick?
thanks in advance

Have a look at http://netputing.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=12
Download v1.3 from netputing.com if you got rid of it.
… is there a Windows 7 version available ??? I have a fabulous Canon MP495 ($25 on sale) that surprisingly doesn’t support AirPrint…
Sorry, I only make a Mac version.

Hi, I hope you could help me with the following issue.
I installed v2.0b16 by mistake thinking it was the newest version, so I removed it (just deleted the app) and installed the newest v2.1b2 since I wanted to use the firewall file.
When I checked the associated files that were installed I noticed a copy of the airprint daemon located under user/library/application support/airprint activator folder. When I checked the version of the file I noticed it was from v2.0b16 (v111) and not the daemon from v2.1b2 (v113)
So I thought I would install it again. I turned it off and removed all the associated files before re-installing this time (using uninstaller from Clean my Mac).
After installing again v2.1b2 I noticed that the copy of airprintdaemon that was located under user/library/application support/airprint activator folder was no longer there (I was expecting it there but this time being the v113). However the folder was created and it has he defaults.xml file, but not the airprintdaemon copy. I also noticed a plist file under library/launch agents to run the daemon that I didn’t notice before.
So I’m just wondering if I messed up with the installation or something. However it works fine and it’s loading the daemon from within the app contents.
I’m very curious about that file missing. My thoughts are that maybe v2.0b16 used this file but v2.1b2 doesn’t and it was originally there as a leftover since when I removed v2.0b16 I just deleted the app.
Is this the way it’s supposed to be with v2.1b2? Or the daemon copy is supposed to be there? I didn’t check from where it was running the daemon on v2.0b16.
Thanks in advance.
And by the way, thanks for the app, it’s great!
Don’t worry, v2.1b2 simply moved the file. It is actually kept within the AirPrint Activator application itself.
Cheers!
Thanks a lot for your extremely quick reply, hehe.
And so the plist file on the launch agents folder was not present on v2.0b16 or I just didn’t notice it?
Was always there. You probably just missed it 😉

I love this app! Any thoughts on turning the interface into a Preference Pane ala ˜/Library/PreferencePanes? The UI is more consistent with the preference pane interface than as an app since its only the control/configuration of the server and not needed to be running for the capability to function.
It originally was but the issue was with the helper application. Until I can figure out a way to build what it does in the main daemon I won’t be able to make it a true PrefPane app…
had version one that worked for a while and then quit working. I downloaded the newest version and it does not seem to work. The printer does not show up in your dialog box. I go to printers click sharing and make sure the sharing is clicked in sharing nothing. I even unclicked and reclicked the options hoping that would make a difference. I am using v 10.6.8 and a samsung clp printer. I have it running on bonjour and can access it from my laptop.
Try following the instructions in this post: http://netputing.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=12
This should get you going!
I’m also having problems getting APA to work. Running 2.0b16 (2.0b12 didn’t work either). Duplex is turned off. Firewall is turned off. The iPhone says it prints, then immediately says the printer is off line. APA says it is online, and shared. I’m stumped.
AirPrint Activator 2.0b2 seemed to install properly. I can send a print request to my networked Canon MX 880 series printer, but I then get a message that the the printer is paused. When I go to the print center to resume printing, it still will not print. I do not have firewall turned on and duplexing is not on – running Lion 10.7.2.
Can’t get the printers to show up on iOS devices (5.0.1). OS 10.6.8, Sharing on, Printers are in Airprint list, Firewall off.
Usually it is a result of your iDevice not being connected to the same network as the Mac sharing the printers. Make sure the iDevice is connecting over WiFi to the same network as your Mac.
I have a D-Link DIR-615 router and had to de-select “Enable Multicast Streams” in the Advanced Network Settings to get this to work. Thanks!
Thank you for the tip, I hope it will help others!
Thanks, thanks, thank !
that is brilliant.
Duplex Printing DOES work on my 10.6.8 + iOs 5.0
congratulations
