VPN Activator and Apple’s Bonjour over VPN
The VPN Activator is getting pretty stable now but the one thing that get me wanting for more is the fact that Apple’s Bonjour service advertisement does not work across a VPN.
I might have found a way to make this work. I will start to work on a possible solution today and hope to have a working prototype in the next couple days.
If this work it might mean that once you connect to your home network on your MacBook you will see all the shared printers, iTunes library, etc, etc.
I don’t know if this will work on iDevices yet but I am pretty sure it should work with Mac OSX devices (and windows PC running Bonjour).
I will keep you posted.
UPDATE:
OK, so it appear that I can make selective bonjour advertisement visible across the VPN. It does work on a MAC. Unfortunately the iPhone/iPad does not appear to support the method to list bonjour resource. For example, a printer shared this way will not show up in the printer list when connected over a VPN… so no printing back hove via AirPrint across a VPN.
Making advertisement visible over the VPN is very time consuming and require quite a bit of DNS file creation. I hope to find a method to make this transparent via some programmation magic… but I am pretty new with all this so let not have too much hope.
