AirPrint Hacktivator
A lot of people are looking at activating AirPrint on the new Snow Leopard 10.6.5… but it requires a tedious terminal session.
So I followed a link from a tuaw.com post to the 3 files required and wrote a small wrapper around them to make the installation easier. The application is called AirPrintHacktivator and can be downloaded on this page. The application allow you to “Hacktivate” and “De Hacktivate” AirPrint by adding or removing the 3 files required… all of this while making a backup of the current files so they are properly restored during “De Hacktivation”.
What you need?
- An iPhone or iPad with 4.2GM
- A Mac with Snow Leopard 10.6.5 installed
- iTunes 10.1+ installed
- AirPrintHacktivator
The application will attempt to detect if you have the right combination of OS and iTunes.
WARNING! USE AT YOUR OWN RISK! It is working fine for me but don’t come crying if it break something on your Mac… mmmkay!

UPDATE: Added iTunes 10.1 beta 2 to the requirement’s list and general fix-ups here and there.
UPDATE 2: Added link to source of 3 files from original tuaw.com post in case one wonder.
UPDATE 3: iTunes 10.1 is now officially available. I am away so I can’t test if it will bring full AirPrint support without the need for this hack. I really hope it will…
UPDATE 4: iTunes 10.1 still need hacktivation for AirPrint to work. Updated requirement section to list 10.1 final as needed product.
UPDATE 5: Updated link to application to point to new and improved version and cleaned up the AppleScript portion.
works! Great ! Thanks
Didnt work for me. I followed the instructions. Tried rebooting and removing/adding printer several times but didnt work.
My ipad still shows No printers found. Any ideas?
That happened to me and it worked after I repaired disk permissions. The added files were in the list of repaired permissions.

Does anyone have the issue where every other page is upside down. I have a HP laserjet 3600n and it keeps printing like that on the iphone and ipad but my mac prints fine.
Great little hack by the way simple and clean.
Thank’s! Not sure if it has to do with duplexing option… It might be a possibility. Maybe you could try one of the paid app demo that also enable AirPrint through some private services. One of them that look particularly good is Printopia: http://ecamm.com/mac/printopia/
Not sure if it is worth buying but you might want to try the demo to see if it print better than the native Apple files.
AirPrint did not work for me but printopia is working. Thanks.

Works perfectly. thanks
I tried to run, it requires my password, but the status button is still in “off” state and nothing happens.
What could be wrong?
You need to use an admin id and password for it to install. Make sure
the user that run AirPrintHacktivator in an administrator.
I’m an admin on this computer, no other user exists, still doesn’t work…
I hope i did not broke the app during the 1.6 code upgrade… Try
downloading 1.5 by replacing the 6 with a 5 in the link.
1.5 is working, thanks for the tip!
Oh oh… I will have to look at that…

I tried version 1.6 on my side and all work fine. Not sure why it did not worked for you and 1.5 worked…
Works great! Thanks for putting this together!

Does anyone know if this will work with network printers that are installed and shared or will it only work with local USB printers?
If you share the network printer with you MAc it will work. Does not cost much to try it 😉
Didn’t work for my networked printer. I could see it on my iPad but when it came time to print, nothing happened.
Strange. Maybe your printer is not supported? Which printer is it?

Works great… Thank you!!
Should it also work with a printer, that is connected to the Apple Time Capsule?
Not with this tool. I think that the paid application fingerprint
might do that.

Works great!
Those of you having trouble, don’t forget to follow the simple instructions. Once I deleted and re-added my wi-fi connected printer (and made sure print sharing was enabled in System Preferences) it worked like a charm.
Wow, works brilliantly!
You are da man! Thanks for putting this together. It worked perfectly!
Initally it did not work for me either. Then I noticed that I used an old version (1.0) instead of the latest (1.6) version. After using this version it worked fantastic!!!
Will this work with an iPod Touch?
Depend on the generation. New ones yes, 1st gen no
Worked perfectly! Thank you so much!!!
Works! I just had to install it, delete my printer and then add it back with the sharing on and it worked like a charm with my iPhone!
THANKS!!!!!!
Thank you very much for creating this. I was prepared to do the terminal hackwork, but this is brilliant.
Will it work on 10.6.5 server?
Wonderful. Easy and thorough. Thanks so much!

Awesome! Works fantastic when I used the 1.6v! Thanks man
Magnificent! Works like a charm. I had trouble initially getting it to work, but I tried a standard Windoze trick (going through the steps one at a time, and rebooting between each step), and that cleared it up.
I do have one issue though. I have a Mac Mini as the AirPrint “server”, and it’s usually asleep. Even with “Wake for network access” checked in Energy Saver prefs, it still won’t wake up for AirPrinting. Anyone have a clue about getting this to work?
Oh very good! Thank you – a real added benefit!
When I start AirPrint Hacktivator v1.7 and try to slide the slider to ON, I have to enter my administrator password, but then nothing happens. Any ideas?
Can you use the forum to discuss? I might try to make a new build of the application that use Administrator rights to execute a command that is currently done as a regular user. Maybe your Mac is not allowing your user to perform the needed query as a regular user.On my mac the user that I use to develop is part of the administrator group… Is the account you use to run the application part of the administrator or regular user group? That could explain why. I might have to rethink the logic of the application to deal with this situation.
Some peiple have reported this. Not sure what cause this beaide the
fact that the application fail to execute a terminal command.
Can you give some details about your system? Does it’s name contain a
space? Is the os on an external drive?
